THE CAPTAIN OF THE POLESTAR and Other Tales.

[inscribed by A. Conan Doyle] Fourth Edition. London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1892. 24 pp ads dated "6/92". Original maroon cloth lettered on the spine in silver.

"Fourth Edition," which is to say the fourth printing of the first edition, issued with its silver stamping (and a frontispiece plate) as a volume in Longmans Green's "Silver Library." The first printing, issued in March 1890, had constituted Doyle fifth book -- following A STUDY IN SCARLET, THE MYSTERY OF CLOOMBER, MICAH CLARKE and MYSTERIES AND ADVENTURES. It is a volume of ten short stories, perhaps most notable (according to G&G) for "J. Habakuk Jephson's Statement" about the brig Mary Celeste -- about which, years later, people were still trying to figure out just how much was true and how much was fabricated. "When I wrote a yarn round this incident it was done irresponsibly and I never imagined it would be seriously analysed," said Doyle later.~This volume is in very good-plus condition (volume a bit askew, minor rubbing at the extremities, occasional light foxing, rear cover faintly marked). See Green & Gibson A5a&b.~This copy is inscribed by Doyle at the top of the title page, "With A. Conan Doyle's kindest regards | Nov 30th /92". As with other Doyle inscriptions we have seen in these early Longmans Green volumes, the inscription has "bled" a little, due to the paper and to the pen and ink Doyle used. Quite early -- just after Doyle had finally hit it big with the serial publication of THE ADVENTURES OF SHERLOCK HOLMES in The Strand Magazine. Item #13932
