THE AMBASSADORS. Henry James.
THE AMBASSADORS.

THE AMBASSADORS.

[the finest copy we have had] A Novel. New York and London: Harper & Brothers, 1903. Original light blue boards, with fabric dust jacket.

First American Edition of the novel in which a rich Massachusetts widow sends various "ambassadors" (an admirer, a daughter, etc.) to France to bring back her son from what she presumes is an undesirable liaison. This was considered by James himself to be "quite the best, 'all round,' of my productions." In preparing this edition, Harper made an error that became the accepted norm for this novel, undiscovered for almost half a century: chapters 28 and 29 were mistakenly reversed in order (into chronological sequence, wiping out James's intended flashback effect).~This is it: the finest copy we have ever offered, over our 35+ years in business. The volume is fine, without wear or soil; the fabric dust jacket is fine as well. It's not a scarce book (or jacket), but this condition is rare indeed. Supino 58.6.0; Edel & Laurence A58b; Modern Library 100 #27; a Connolly Modern Movement selection. Housed in a handsome morocco-backed slipcase with inner chemise. Item #13949
