A New Edition. London: Chapman and Hall, 1859. 32 pp ads dated November 1859. Original buff cloth stamped in black and red-orange.
Second Edition of Anthony Trollope's second book, preceded only by THE MACDERMOTS OF BALLYCLORAN -- these two being the author's two tales of Irish life, written while he lived there. The two novels were originally published, each in three volumes, by T.C. Newby in 1847 and by Henry Colburn in 1848 respectively -- and both are today legendarily rare. Then in late 1859, after books like THE WARDEN (1855) and BARCHESTER TOWERS (1857) had made Trollope popular, Chapman & Hall published a "New Edition" of his first two books, including this one -- cheaply bound in this buff cloth with the title page reproduced on the front cover.~This copy is in very good condition, with the buff cloth a bit darkened and soiled and with the top eighth-inch of the spine chipped -- not great, but this too is a very scarce edition. Sadleir (Trollope) p. 10. Item #13960
