Boston and New York: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1924. Original grey cloth decorated in red.
First Edition, published eleven days before the London one. (This was the first of Buchan's many American editions to be published by Houghton Mifflin -- due to Ferris Greenslet, a fellow-fisherman and wartime friend of Buchan who was now a partner there.) This tale of mystery, originally titled by the author ENCHANTER'S NIGHTMARE, was the fourth of the five Richard Hannay detective tales (preceded by THE THIRTY-NINE STEPS, GREENMANTLE and MR. STEADFAST, and followed by THE MAN FROM THE NORLANDS / THE ISLAND OF SHEEP; there is also a Hannay short story in Buchan's 1928 collection THE RUNAGATES CLUB.
This is a fine copy (without dust jacket -- which if present would more than quadruple the price). Blanchard A62. Item #14141
