New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1881. Undated endpaper ads. Original yellow-ochre cloth with hanging sword in black.
First Edition of Anna Katharine Green's third book, a romantic mystery following THE LEAVENWORTH CASE (1878) and A STRANGE DISAPPEARANCE (1880). Green is often credited with being the first female detective novelist (not quite true); Detective Ebenezer Gryce of the NYPD (from the first two books) appears in this book as well. In some of the thirteen Detective Gryce books, he is "assisted" by the nosy spinster Amelia Butterworth, prototype for subsequent sleuths such as Miss Marple.
This copy is in yellow-ochre cloth (one of numerous colors used without priority). Condition is very good-plus (very little wear, but some minor cover soil). Item #14248
