DAISY MILLER: A Study | AN INTERNATIONAL EPISDODE | FOUR MEETINGS.

In Two Volumes. London: Macmillan and Co., 1879. Original royal blue cloth stamped in black and gilt.

First English Edition (of the first two tales, both of which had just appeared in Harper's "Half-Hour Series" in America; first edition in book form of the third tale). This is one of the scarcest of James's works, as there were only two printings of 250 copies each, a month apart. In this copy, p. 144 of Vol II is mispaginated "145"; since in some copies the page is correctly paginated, this may be the one difference between the two printings (in which case copies with the error -- like this copy -- are more likely to have been first). This copy does not have an ad catalogue (some copies do, at the end of Vol II -- no priority).

This edition of DAISY MILLER also demonstrates, with its large print and wide spacing (there are only 17 lines of text per page), the extreme to which the multi-volume format had come: clearly these three tales could have easily fit within one volume, but the lending libraries (who bought almost all of the copies) insisted upon multiple volumes as it increased their rental income.

This set is in very good condition, with minor evidence of a lending library's label having once resided on each front cover; there is minor wear at the extremities and most of the endpapers evidence some cracking at the gutter -- typical for volumes that were once rented out. Not a fine set, but not bad either: due to the small number of copies printed, and the large number that were undoubtedly snagged immediately by the lending libraries, this is one James title that seldom appears in any better condition. Supino 8.17.0; Edel & Laurence A8b; Blanck 10540. Provenance: bookplates of the San Diego artist Alice Klauber (1871-1951). Item #14270
