THE EUROPEANS. A Sketch. Henry Jr James.

THE EUROPEANS. A Sketch.

Boston: Houghton, Osgood and Company, 1879. Original dark green cloth, beveled.

First American Edition, first impression, which consisted of only about 1500 copies. This was actually published in October 1878, less than a month after the two-volume London edition (which is now decidedly rare). One of James's earliest novels (published just three years after his first), in THE EUROPEANS James reversed his usual theme of Americans in Europe -- as it centers about the entrance into Bostonian society of a European brother and his sister (who is in need of a wealthy husband to replace her current German one).

According to Supino and Blanck there were three printings that all bear the date 1879 on the title page: the first was printed on Oct 7, 1878, and was bound up later that month; the second was printed on Dec 24 1878, but was not bound up until Jan 2 - March 19, 1879; the third was printed on April 21, 1879, and was bound up during the period April 30 - Dec 1, 1879. The three impressions differ only in collation, with the unfortunate result that today many second and third impression copies are being sold as first impressions; this copy, however, is indeed from the first impression, as the initial gathering (after binder's flyleaves) consists of only two leaves -- blank plus title leaf.

This copy is in dark green cloth (three colors were used, with no priority). This copy is unusually clean and bright -- near-fine, with some wear at the very delicate tips of the spine. Supino 7.7.0; Edel & Laurence A7b; Blanck 10537. Item #14331
