LIBERTY TREE: with the Last Words of Grandfather's Chair.

Boston: E.P. Peabody, 1841. Original green-grey pebble-grain cloth with front cover black paper label printed in gilt.

First Edition of this early Hawthorne title, written as a grandfather's presentation to his grandchildren of the events in an around Boston during the Revolutionary War. Published in March 1841 (with the Preface dated February 27th), this was the third volume of a trilogy of such juvenile books by Hawthorne, following GRANDFATHER'S CHAIR and FAMOUS OLD PEOPLE (published in December 1840 and January 1841 respectively). This was "very early Hawthorne" -- the only major title to have preceded this trilogy was his TWICE-TOLD TALES of 1837.

This is a true first edition, with the requisite readings in the text cited by Clark and by Blanck (later in 1841 there was a partially-reset second edition, not so identified). This copy is in green-grey pebble-grained cloth, one of several colors and textures employed without priority. It is a remarkably near-fine copy: most unusual is that the gold design and lettering on the black front cover label remains intact and though rubbed, is still quite legible -- most copies encountered have this gold worn to illegibility. In all, this little volume is in amazing condition for an almost-180-year-old fragile children's book. Clark A8.1; Blanck 7592. Housed in a morocco-backed slipcase with inner chemise

Provenance: the front paste-down bears an inked presentation, dated April 25, 1841, from Mrs. John A. Lowell to ten-year-old George Schetky Richardson. Mrs. John Amory Lowell (née Elizabeth Cabot Putnam), already part of the Cabot and Putnam families of Massachusetts, had married into a third famous Massachusetts family; the recipient (1831-1875) was born in Boston but, involved in the cotton business, migrated first to Memphis and then to St. Louis where he died at the age of 43.
