FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS.

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1940. Original oatmeal cloth with red bands, with dust jacket.

First Edition of what is often considered to be Hemingway's masterpiece, sited during the Spanish Civil War -- also his longest work. The 1943 film starred Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergman as Robert Jordan and Maria, but many would claim that the star of the film was Katina Paxinou as Pilar.

This is a copy from the first printing, with the "A" on the copyright page, and includes the first-state original dust jacket (with the price of $2.75 and with NO photographer's credit on the rear panel). The volume is in near-fine condition (with scarcely any of the usual flaking of the red pigment on the spine). The jacket is very good-plus: in appearance it is near-fine, as there are just a few very small chips at corners, and atypically the red on the spine is still bright; however, on the inside of the jacket there is (unnecessary) tape reinforecement across the top and bottom.
