["Presentation Copy"] London: Methuen & Co., (1910). 32 pp ads dated Sep 1910. Original rust-brown cloth with spine decorated in gilt.
First English Edition (1500 copies published on 13 October 1910, one week after the American) of this collection of five tales. The tales are "The Velvet Glove," "Mora Montravers," "A Round of Visits," "Crapy Cornelia" and "The Bench of Desolation." As E&L points out, copies have ads dated either August, September or October: "No priority has been established. ...an advance review copy has been noted with the October dating. It is likely that the latest date (as both Muir and Carter, among others, have pointed out) will be found in the earliest issue."
This is a publisher's presentation copy (with ink-stamp on the title page), and has the September ads. Its condition is near-fine (spine very slightly darkened, a little foxing on the first few leaves within). Supino 68.4.0; Edel & Laurence A68b. Provenance: the front paste-down bears the bookplate of a woman who in August 1948 bought this book at Wm. Dawson & Sons (London), and had it mailed to the S.S. Britannic in Liverpool for her voyage home in September (loosely inserted is Dawson's card with these instructions, and she dated the endpaper); this copy is only now leaving that woman's family.
