Being some further Chronicles of Martin Hewitt: Investigator. London: Eveleigh Nash, 1903. Original blue cloth pictorially decorated in red, white and black.
First Edition of these six "further chronicles" of cases solved by Martin Hewitt, Investigator -- the fourth and final such volume. These are the cases "of Samuel's Diamonds," "of Mr. Jacob Mason," "of the Lever Key," "of the Burnt Barn," "of the Admiralty Code" and "of Channel Marsh." Prompted by the huge success of Sherlock Holmes's ADVENTURES and MEMOIRS (1892 and 1894), Morrison churned out MARTIN HEWITT: INVESTIGATOR (1894), CHRONICLES OF MARTIN HEWITT (1895) and ADVENTURES OF MARTIN HEWITT (1896) -- and finally this one, seven years later (just before Sherlock's RETURN in 1905).
This is a near-fine copy, with a few trifling cover marks but with the original endpapers intact and with none of the usual foxing within. Quayle p. 74; Ellery Queen (The Detective Short Story) page 75. Item #14398
