IS SHAKESPEARE DEAD?

From My Autobiography. New York and London: Harper & Brothers, 1909. Original green cloth.

First Edition of this work in which Twain probes, with his usual humor, the Shakespeare-Bacon controversy (ending up with the conclusion that Bacon must have written the major plays). This was in response to Sir George Greenwood's 1908 book THE SHAKESPEARE PROBLEM RESTATED.

This copy does have, following the title leaf, the "Publisher's Note" leaf regarding Greenwood, but has no ad leaf at the rear (it is believed that the earliest copies had neither); there is also no rubber-stamped notice on the copyright page. Condition is near-fine (a little light speckling on the front cover, a trace of wear at the spine head). McBride p. 233; Blanck 3509. Item #14499

Price: $200.00
