Or The Castle of the De Stancys. A Tale of To-Day. Illustrated by Du Maurier. New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1881. Undated endpaper ads. Original mustard yellow cloth decorated in black.
First Authorized American Edition. Henry Holt was Hardy's authorized American publisher, but in the case of A LAODICEAN Harper's issued its wrappered Franklin Square Library edition a week before the English three-decker and two weeks before the present volume (No. 131 in Holt's "Leisure Hour Series"). This Holt edition includes reproductions of six of the thirteen Du Maurier illustrations that appeared in the three-decker.
This copy has the primary endpaper ads, listing no Hardy titles published later than this one; it is in remarkably clean, fine condition -- highly unusual for these light-colored Holt bindings. Purdy p. 40. Item #14508
