PLAYS AND CONTROVERSIES. Yeats, illiam, utler.

New York: The Macmillan Company, 1924. Original medium-brown paper boards with blue-grey cloth spine and printed spine and front cover labels.

Limited American Edition, consisting of only 250 numbered copies signed by Yeats -- this being #183. Included in this volume are "The Countess Cathleen," "The Land of Heart's Desire," plus the "Four Plays for Dancers" -- with a few minor additions by Yeats for this volume. Also included is a frontispiece portrait of Yeats by John Singer Sargent, plus seven illustrations by Edmund Dulac for Yeats's "At the Hawk's Well." This was the third and final volume in Macmillan's Collected Edition of Yeats's works (the first two had been LATER POEMS and PLAYS IN PROSE AND VERSE; in each case, an English edition came out first (no signed copies), followed a year or so later by an American edition (trade copies plus 250 signed copies).

This copy is in very good-plus condition (spine a little darkened, light ruffling at the spine ends); these limited/signed editions are in a different binding than the UK and US trade copies, and we have never seen one in a dust jacket. Wade 140. Item #14566
