First American Edition of this tale sited during the 1793 insurrection of La Vendée. The original French edition, QUATRE-VINGT-TREIZE, plus the London three-decker by Sampson Low (same translation as this), were also published in 1874. Although the title is spelled out on the title page, it is "'93" on this book's spine.

This copy is in bright kelly green moiré cloth; others (no priority) were bound in blue moiré, dark green, terra cotta or violet cloth. It is a bright copy, fine except for very slight wear at the foot of the spine. Item #14585
