A Novel. New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1874. Endpaper ads dated June 5th, 1875. Original cream cloth decorated in black.
First American Edition of Hardy's first book, being a volume in the "Leisure Hour Series" of Henry Holt. Though this was his first book published in England (anonymously, in 1871), it was his third to be published in America, after UNDER THE GREENWOOD TREE and A PAIR OF BLUE EYES. This three-year delay is noteworthy in that "Hardy was permitted to make certain revisions in the text for this edition" [Purdy].
This copy has the endpaper ads in a later state, dated June 5th, 1875 (the first state is March 17th, 1874); the volume is in the first binding state (cream rather than mustard yellow cloth). Very good-plus condition (spine a bit darkened as usual, but there is less cover wear and soil than we typically see on this delicate, cream-colored cloth). This is a rather uncommon volume (the English three-decker is truly rare). Purdy p. 5. Item #14594
