CATRIONA. A Sequel to "Kidnapped".

Being Memoirs of the Further Adventures of David Balfour at Home and Abroad. London Paris & Melbourne: Cassell and Company, 1893. 2 pp undated ads plus 16 pp ads dated Aug 1893. Original dark blue cloth.

First Edition (English) of this tale that is a sequel to KIDNAPPED, published on the same day as the American edition which is titled DAVID BALFOUR (who is the protagonist of both books). Stevenson wrote the book with the title DAVID BALFOUR, but during serialization in England the public was confused, thinking this might be merely a reprint of KIDNAPPED; at Cassell's request, the title was changed to CATRIONA (Balfour's daughter, pronounced "Ka-TREE-a-na"). To this day the tale has a different title on each side of the Atlantic.

This is a near-fine copy (bookplate; scarcely any wear other than some of the usual cracking of the delicate patterned endpapers). Beinecke 588; Princeton 54. Housed in a morocco-backed slipcase with inner chemise. Item #14605

Price: $295.00
