First American Edition -- actually the American issue of the second (first one-volume) English edition, printed in England for the American market. In May 1889 Macmillan published this title in two volumes -- only 500 copies; stereotype plates were then made for a one-volume second edition, from which Macmillan in June printed 2000 one-volume copies for the American market (dark blue cloth, with a dollar ad leaf), followed by another 2000 one-volume copies for the British market (red cloth, with a sterling ad leaf).
