London, Edinburgh, Dublin, Leeds and New York: Thomas Nelson and Sons, n.d. . Original blind-stamped blue cloth.
First Edition of this collection of tales of fantasy, science fiction and the supernatural. According to Wells's introduction, these constitute "all the short stories by me that I care for any one to read again." Included is a color frontispiece by Dudley Tennant. 28 of the 33 tales had appeared earlier in such volumes as THE STOLEN BACILLUS, THE PLATTNER STORY and TALES OF SPACE AND TIME; the other five, appearing here for the first time in book form, are "A Vision of Judgment," "The Empire of the Ants," "The Door in the Wall," "The Beautiful Suit" and the title story. "The Door in the Wall," often considered one of Wells's best tales, appeared separately later in 1911 accompanied by photographs by Alvin Langdon Coburn; it also appeared as an experimental film in 1956.
This is a near-fine copy (a few small faint cover spots) of this none-too-common science fiction collection. Hammond C6; Wells Soc. 42; Currey p. 517. Item #14670
