Boston: Ticknor and Fields, 1858. 12 pp ads dated October 1858. Original blind-stamped brown cloth.
First American Edition, first printing (the only one with the title page dated 1858). The title verse is one of Longfellow's better-known poems (over 100 pages long), sited in the Plymouth Colony of the Mayflower pilgrims and describing the love triangle of Miles Standish, Priscilla Mullens and John Alden -- which Longfellow claimed was true.
This copy is in Ticknor's standard brown cloth binding; copies were also available in "gilt extra" and "full gilt" gift bindings. Condition is FINE; as we have seen in some other copies, a Ticknor & Fields ad for Scott's Waverley Novels is tipped to the front endpaper. Blanck 12122. Item #14677
