From the Russian by Nathan Haskell Dole. Authorised Translation. London: Walter Scott, n.d. [circa 1889]. 4 pp undated ads in each volume. Original dark blue cloth decorated in gilt (Vols I-III pebbled cloth, Vol IV smooth cloth).
First British Edition of one of the classics of literature. Originally published (in Russian) in 1862-1869, it was not until 1886 that this epic was published in English, in six volumes -- "expressly for [i.e. pirated by] the publisher" William Gottsberger of New York; the translation was by "a Russian lady" into French, then by Clara Bell into English. This British edition, the "authorised translation" as opposed to the earlier pirated one, was accomplished direct from the Russian. Although undated, the translator refers to an 1887 Russian edition, and the ads mention books published in 1888-1889; later (circa 1900), Scott issued a reprint with the four volumes bound into two.
This set is in very good-plus condition (quite minor edge-wear, one tiny pierce of the Vol III front cover); the original endpapers remain intact. In our experience, this "authorised" (and likely more accurate) Scott translation is considerably scarcer than the pirated Gottsberger one: there are currently six complete Gottsberger sets in original cloth on the market (priced between $9,000 and $22,500), while there are only two other Scott sets, in considerably worse condition than this one.
