New York: The Macmillan Company, 1900. 3 pp undated ads. Original deep red linen-grain cloth.
First American Edition, published about a month after the English. This is a collection of a dozen short stories, nine of which had appeared in magazines over the preceding two years.
This copy does have a blind-stamped rule at the head and foot of the spine; E&L says some copies have this and others don't, with no priority, but Supino speculates that all copies had these lines, but they are so subtle at the very ends of the spine, they are easy to overlook. Condition is close to fine (spine slightly faded as usual for this color, two small cello-tape marks on the front paste-down). Though 2,800 copies were produced, we find the American THE SOFT SIDE to be rather uncommon in nice condition. Supino 54.4.0; Edel & Laurence A54b. Item #14729
