With Illustrations, by H. K. Browne. New York: Harper & Brothers, n.d.. 2-page terminal list of Harper's Library of Select Novels, ending with #258. Original dark blue-green honeycomb-grain cloth.
First American Edition of the first of Trollope's six "Palliser" novels, published in September 1865, the month after the final UK serial part (the two UK volumes were published in October 1864 and in June 1865). The illustrator at the beginning of twenty-part serialization was Hablot K. Browne (who decades earlier had illustrated Dickens books as "Phiz"); however, beginning with the eleventh part Browne was replaced by Miss E. Taylor, a friend of the author; her illustrations are here identifiable by the single-line border around the image. This Harper first edition is unusual in that its title page is undated: this is because Harper used the serial parts wrapper design (minus any dates) for the title page -- and also for the front wrapper of those volumes issued in that format.
The list of titles at the rear is Smith's primary state; he also lists a total of twelve cloth colors and grains used by Harper (in addition to paper wrappers). Condition is very good-plus (minor wear at the spine ends, a few droplet-marks on the covers). W. Smith pp 70-74. Item #14834
