Illustrated. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1896. Original dark green cloth with monogram device in gilt.
First American (and first illustrated) Edition of Hardy's last novel, actually issued in November 1895. The English edition, published a week or two earlier, was unillustrated except for a frontispiece; the American edition, however, contains the twelve Hatherell plates that had appeared in Harper's serialization of the novel. Hardy liked these plates so much that he had all twelve framed over his mantel at Max Gate.
This is a bright, near-fine copy (faint speckling of the rear cover cloth). Purdy p. 91. Provenance: bookplate and posthumous bookplate of Charles F. Wadsworth (1835-1899) of Geneseo, New York: the public library there is named for his family. Item #14846
