First American Edition of this novel. Charles William Shirley Brooks (1816-1874) began as a contributor to Punch Magazine, where his nom de plume was Epicurus Rotundus; in 1870 he took over as Punch editor after Mark Lemon. His name for other writings morphed, over the years, from Charles W. Brooks to C. Shirley Brooks to just Shirley Brooks. This title is today sought more for the fifteen illustrations by the famous artist George Du Maurier -- which also appeared in the two-volume London edition published that same year.
This is a bright, near-fine copy (a few faint marks, a hint of wear at the spine ends). Wolff 840. Item #14848
