The Life and Adventures of NICHOLAS NICKLEBY.

Containing a Faithful Account of the Fortunes, Misfortunes, Uprisings, Downfallings, and Complete Career of the Nickleby Family. Edited by "Boz." With Illustrations by "Phiz." [20-in-19 monthly serial parts.] London: Chapman & Hall, 1838-1839. Original pictorial blue-green wrappers.

First Edition of Dickens's fourth book (and third to appear in serial parts), as originally issued in 20-in-19 monthly serial parts, from April 1838 through October 1839. This serial appearance identified the author only as "Boz," as he had been listed for SKETCHES BY BOZ, PICKWICK PAPERS, and (initially) OLIVER TWIST; when the book edition was published at the end of serialization (using the preliminary leaves supplied in the final part here), his name on the title page and his frontispiece portrait finally identified Dickens (by now famous) as the author.

Regarding the two textual issue points, this set reads "sister" in Part IV (second issue), but "latter" in Part V (first issue). All of the wrappers are "proper" except that the rear wrapper of the final part is supplied from some other part (not so identified, but discernible from the ads). All of the plates are of course present, and are in quite clean condition, though one has an inch-plus tear (not affecting the image). All of the "Nickleby Advertiser" catalogues are present, except for one leaf in Part II and three leaves in Part XIX-XX. Most of the rear ad leaves are present, though not some of the often-missing ones like Amesbury in Part III and Hill's Seal Wafers in XIX-XX (details are available upon request).

Condition is overall very good, with most all of the spines renewed with similar light blue-green paper; there is some generally-minor edge-wear, and Part V has three words inked onto the top margin of the front wrapper. Hatton & Cleaver pp 129-160. Housed in a full straight-grain morocco pull-off case with inner chemise. Item #14880
