THE SHORT STORIES OF THOMAS HARDY.

London: Macmillan and Co., 1928. 2 pp undated ads. Original maroon cloth, with dust jacket.

First Edition so collected, first impression, published 72 days after Hardy's death in January 1928. This is a 1084-page volume, printed on India paper, containing all of the short stories that had appeared in Hardy's four such volumes -- WESSEX TALES (1888), A GROUP OF NOBLE DAMES (1891), LIFE'S LITTLE IRONIES (1896), and A CHANGED MAN (1913), though curiously not in that order.

This is a fine copy, though there are light pencil notations on the Contents pages and on the ad leaf; included is the dust jacket bearing Hardy's image (waist-up facing left within a frame) "after a camera portrait by E.O. Hoppé", which is just about fine as well. (Though Purdy does not cite it, there was also a second impression soon after the first -- for which the jacket has a cropped and reversed version of the same portrait of Hardy (shoulders-up, facing right, no frame).) This is quite a scarce volume, and the jacket, in this condition, is considerably scarcer. Purdy p. 288. Item #14919
