HOW TO TELL A STORY and Other Essays.

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1897. 2 pp undated ads. Original red cloth decorated in gilt and lettered in black.

First Edition of this collection of eight essays, such as "Fenimore Cooper's Literary Offences" and "Private History of the 'Jumping Frog' Story." It is believed that this edition consisted of only 2,000 copies; booksellers often say "first issue, with 'cipher' misspelled 'ciper" on p. 187, but there are no issue points, since all copies have that error.)

This copy is bright and just about fine; the volume has no wear or soil at all, just a bit of natural oxidation of the gilt panels. Because of the small printing, this Twain title is quite uncommon, especially in handsome condition such as this. Blanck 3449; MacBride p. 190. Item #15025
