Illustrated by Maurice Greiffenhagen. New York and London: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1902. 4 pp undated ads. Original dark green cloth pictorially decorated in orange and grey.
First Edition of Conrad's first book to be illustrated -- the famous tale about Captain MacWhirr, Jukes and the Chinamen on board the steamship "Nan-Shan." The principal character is none of the above, but the typhoon itself. The London edition, which included three additional stories but was unillustrated, did not appear until 1903.
This is an attractive, near-fine copy, with scarcely any external soil or wear; there is minor cracking of the endpapers, and a damp-mark on the lower fore-corner of two of the six plates. This is a tough book to find in fine condition. Cagle A8a. Item #15033
