London: Frederick Warne and Co., 1903. Original dark green paper-covered boards with cover pictorial onlay.
First Edition, first state, of Beatrix Potter's third (second?) book -- it came out after Potter's self-printed edition of THE TAILOR OF GLOUCESTER, but preceded that book's trade edition.
On September 25th 1901... she sent a picture letter to Norah Moore, telling her all about Squirrel Nutkin's adventures... By the beginning of 1903 the Warne edition of THE TALE OF PETER RABBIT and Beatrix Potter's privately printed edition of THE TAILOR OF GLOUCESTER were well in hand, so she began work on THE TALE OF SQUIRREL NUTKIN. The picture letter she had sent to Norah was borrowed and copied out... [Linder]
The title page of this copy does NOT include "Author of 'The Tale of Peter Rabbit'"; there were three printings dated 1903, of which the first does not have these words and of which the third printing does have them (the status of the second is uncertain). This is a very good-plus copy (very light wear at some corners, rear endpaper cracked). Linder p. 423; Quinby 5. Item #15044
