THE NIGGER OF THE NARCISSUS. A Tale of the Forecastle

THE NIGGER OF THE NARCISSUS. A Tale of the Forecastle

Garden City NY: Doubleday, Page & Company, 1914. Original blue cloth decorated in gilt.

First edition to include Conrad's famous "Preface," in which he put forth his views on writing as an art. The Preface was suppressed from the 1897/1898 first American or English editions, though Conrad had it privately printed as a separate piece at about that time. For this 1914 edition Conrad also wrote a note "To My Readers in America," in which he rejoices to have the Preface rejoin his book, and also to see his book return to his original title (from THE CHILDREN OF THE SEA, the title of the first American edition).

This copy is from the second (but first clothbound) issue, which includes an inserted frontispiece; the first issue was bound in limp leather, without the illustration. It is in very good-plus condition (light wear at the extremities, short clipping and paperclip-ghosts on the first two (blank) leaves). An uncommon edition. Supino A3.5.0; Cagle A3b(5). Item #15128

Price: $150.00
