SOLDIER TALES.
London: Macmillan and Co., 1896. Original blue cloth pictorially decorated in gilt, all page edges gilt.
First Edition of this collection of seven tales dealing with British soldier life in India (each of which had previously been published). Included are 21 full-page plates by A.S. Hartrick. A curiosity of the book is that each page's headline is SOLDIER STORIES, which was the title used for the American edition. SOLDIER TALES was bound in the same gift style as the recently-published JUNGLE BOOKs and the soon-to-be-published CAPTAINS COURAGEOUS; although it is the least known of the four titles (and hence the least expensive), in our experience it is scarcer than two of the other three.
This is a near-fine copy (volume slightly askew, spine slightly darkened). Stewart 157. Provenance: endpaper blind-stamp of Jack Clark, Hutton, Essex / half-title signature of John Clark, Wanstead. Item #15239
Price: $295.00
