THE PERIL AND THE PRESERVATION OF THE HOME.
Being the William L. Bull Lectures for the Year 1903. Philadelphia: George W. Jacobs & Co., (1903). Original navy blue ribbed cloth lettered in gilt on the spine.
First Edition of this group of four lectures delivered by Jacob Riis, the Danish-American social reformer (and photographer), and muckraking journalist, who did much for the cause of the urban poor -- beginning with his landmark HOW THE OTHER HALF LIVES in 1890. Riis had become a police reporter and photographer during the 1870s, which showed him first-hand the living conditions of the poor in "Hell's Kitchen"; he later was joined in this crusade by Theodore Roosevelt. This book includes 27 photographic plates illustrating the second and third lectures -- from the lantern slides Riis used to illustrate those lectures. An uncommon book, this copy is bright and close to fine. Item #15505
