Item #15522 HALIDON HILL; a Dramatic Sketch, from Scottish History. Sir Walter Scott.
HALIDON HILL; a Dramatic Sketch, from Scottish History.

HALIDON HILL; a Dramatic Sketch, from Scottish History.

Edinburgh: Printed for Archibald Constable and Co., Edinburgh; and Hurst, Robinson, and Co., London, 1822. 8 pp preliminary ads dated June 1822 (Hurst Robinson) plus 8 pp preliminary undated ads (Constable). Original drab printed wrappers.

First Edition, first issue (with no binder's mark below the text on p. 14) of this historical military drama in verse form -"designed to illustrate military antiquities, and the manners of chivalry" (per the author's "advertisement"). Scott wrote it at the request of Joanna Baillie for her upcoming collection of verse (see the Dedication), but it ran too long so it was published separately instead.

This copy has both the Hurst ads and the Constable ads at the front. It is in very good-plus condition (a little wear at the edges of the spine, old Yorkshire bookplate on the front paste-down). Rather remarkable condition for such a fragile 200+ year-old volume. Todd & Bowden 158Aa. Item #15522

Price: $250.00
