HOW TO TELL A STORY and Other Essays.
New York: Harper & Brothers, 1897. 2 pp undated ads. Original red cloth decorated in gilt and lettered in black.
First Edition of this collection of eight essays, such as "Fenimore Cooper's Literary Offences" and "Private History of the 'Jumping Frog' Story." It is believed that this edition consisted of only 2,000 copies; booksellers often say "first issue, with 'cipher' misspelled 'ciper" on p. 187, but it is not an issue point, since all copies have that error. The binding uses matte gilt for the panels, but shiny gilt for the floral decoration.
This copy is in near-fine condition (gilt less than bright, but very little soil or wear). Because of the small printing, this Twain title is quite uncommon, especially in advantageous condition. Blanck 3449; MacBride p. 190. Item #15544
