Item #15793 THE FREE FISHERS. John Buchan.
THE FREE FISHERS.

THE FREE FISHERS.

London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1934. Original green cloth, with dust jacket.

First Edition (British) of this mysterious tale of a secret brotherhood --

of honest men with remarkable powers of communication -- 'We've our ain canny ways and our ain private lines set.' They are seamen from the Firth of Forth with some landward allies such as the hero, who is a young Professor of Divinity at St Andrews. The period is the Napoleonic Wars, the scene is the coast of Fife, the moors of Northumberland, the fens of East Anglia, the enterprise is the rescue of a young man from a black-hearted fanatic [Smith].

This is a fine copy; the pictorial jacket (portraying a coach and four veering along a narrow lane) is in near-fine condition -- light wear at the top edge of the rear panel, but with virtually nothing lacking. Blanchard A103. Item #15793
