IN THE YEAR OF JUBILEE.

A Novel. New York: D. Appleton and Co., 1895. 8 pp undated ads. Original green cloth decorated in red and gilt.

First American Edition, issued as a volume in Appleton's "Town & Country Library." Since this series was intended for family fireside reading, and since Appleton advertised that all such volumes would be suitable for "even the most fastidious maiden," many Town & Country titles were severely bowdlerized. According to Collie, in April 1895 Lawrence & Bullen, publisher of the three-decker first edition, transferred the copyright to Appleton for a payment of fifty pounds; in 1926, Appleton Century in turn offered to sell the copyright to Gissing's son for $300.00. Though this is one of the more common American editions of Gissing, we do not often see a fine, bright copy such as this. Collie A13c; Spiers & Coustillas Q10. Item #2729
