London, Paris, New York and Melbourne: Cassell and Company, 1904. 2 pp undated ads plus 16 pp ads dated Sep 1904. Original red cloth decorated in gilt.

First Edition of this chivalrous romance taking place in the Holy Land at the time of the Crusades. The book is dedicated to Haggard's sister Ella -- whose son had accompanied the Haggards, as a secretary, on their 1900 trip to Palestine, where this book was first conceived. This was the first Haggard book to be published by Cassell since KING SOLOMON'S MINES in 1885 (Haggard had no love for Cassell, but felt it necessary to sell both the serial and book rights to the same publisher). The book is unillustrated, at Haggard's request: he was proud of THE BRETHREN and feared that illustrations might detract from his work. This is a fine, bright copy. Scott 42; McKay 36; Whatmore F27; Allen 10. Item #5750
