Translated by W. J. Gordon. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1881. 16 pp undated ads. Original chocolate brown cloth pictorially decorated in black and gilt, beveled.

First American Hardbound Edition of the first part of Verne's South American adventure THE GIANT RAFT (the second part, THE CRYPTOGRAM, was published later). Published in French in 1881 as LA JANGADA (a Brazilian term for a large river raft), the first American edition of Part I was Munro's wrappered Seaside Library version, in July of that year. Sampson Low's illustrated hardbound London edition came out in November 1881, followed by this American edition in December; the American second part did not come out until September 1882.~This copy is in chocolate brown cloth (one of several colors used, without priority); other than very slight wear at the spine ends it is a fine, bright copy.
